Living Through the Hard Times
I grew up in a family where nothing is given, we had to earn everything with hard work and dedication. My parents have worked in the fields since the day they came to the U.S. (1995). Being the oldest child out of three, I always had to be the one to help them work in the fields that way they make a little extra money left over after they pay the rent. Most of the time my dad is out of the house for the whole day because of his work and I am not a big fan of that, but I understand that he is working to give my sisters and I a better life.
My family also doesn’t go out as much because of the long shifts my parents have, so when they do have a chance to rest, they spend time with us. It may not be what we want at the time but my sisters and I understand because they must be tired from all the working. My parents are really understanding with my decisions I make and support me on everything. Times are tough and sometimes the materials I need are too expensive. They always try their best to get me what I need, however sometimes I’m not able to get all the materials I need and in those cases all I have to do is try to get through the situation and find a way to solve the dead end I was in. I grew up in a small and humble community where everyone knows each other. I grew up going to Jefferson Elementary, I wasn’t really happy to go to that school because all the people that bullied me attended that school as well. Bullying started when I was in kindergarten and ended my junior year, sure bullying was a big obstacle but I learned to ignore it and get through all those tough years. As I was growing up I always dreamed of attending Sacramento State University and becoming a lawyer. People in school have put me down telling that it’s not going to happen, while others have encouraged me to follow my dreams. My junior year I got the opportunity to talk to two attorneys and tell me about their past and how they made it to where they were. Their stories were similar to mine and that only made me want to keep on following my dream. Now I am a senior at Lindsay High School and I haven’t given up the thought of attending the University of Sacramento and becoming a lawyer. I’ve been through too much and worked too hard to just let go of my dreams, when I am closer than ever before. Once I have a career as a lawyer I plan to get my parents to stop working in the fields and get them a better home. I don’t want them to keep suffering after all they’ve been through I feel the need to help them just like they have helped me throughout my whole life.
